We use the official TWL (Tournament Word List) and SOWPODS (Collins Scrabble Words) dictionaries — the same word lists used in official Scrabble tournaments worldwide. TWL contains 172,000+ words for US/Canada play; SOWPODS contains 267,000+ words for international play.
Use ? to represent blank tiles or wildcards. Our engine treats each ? as any letter, checking every possible substitution against the dictionary. You can use up to 2 wildcards per search.
Filter results by starting letters, ending letters, or required letters. This is especially useful when you need a word that fits a specific board position or when you have too many results to browse.
Every word is scored using official Scrabble letter values (A=1, B=3, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=4, G=2, H=4, I=1, J=8, K=5, L=1, M=3, N=1, O=1, P=3, Q=10, R=1, S=1, T=1, U=1, V=4, W=4, X=8, Y=4, Z=10). Note: board multipliers are not included in the score shown.

Word games have been a beloved pastime for generations. From the classic Scrabble board on a family game night to the daily ritual of solving Wordle on your phone during a morning commute, these games sharpen vocabulary, improve pattern recognition, and bring people together. But they can also be frustrating — especially when you know a word exists but can't quite pull it from memory under pressure.
Word Unscrambler was built to remove that frustration. It is not a replacement for skill or vocabulary — it is a companion tool that helps you explore the full space of possibilities from your letters. Many players use it to learn new words they didn't know existed, expanding their vocabulary over time rather than just winning individual games.
We built the tool to be fast, accurate, and completely free because we believe word game resources should be accessible to everyone — from casual players who just want to beat a friend at Words with Friends to serious tournament competitors who need a reliable reference for TWL and SOWPODS word validation.
When you enter letters into Word Unscrambler, the engine generates every possible permutation of those letters and checks each one against the selected dictionary. For a rack of seven letters, that means evaluating thousands of combinations in milliseconds. The engine handles wildcards by substituting every letter of the alphabet for each ? character, multiplying the search space while still returning results instantly.
Results are grouped by word length (longest first) and sorted by Scrabble point value within each group. This ordering is intentional — in most word games, longer words score more points, and within the same length, higher-value tiles mean higher scores. The layout lets you scan for your best play at a glance without scrolling through an unsorted list.
The TWL dictionary contains approximately 172,000 words and the SOWPODS dictionary contains approximately 267,000 words. Both are loaded from curated word lists that are updated to reflect the current official tournament standards. The dictionaries are served directly from our servers so results are always consistent and accurate, regardless of your device or connection.
Word Unscrambler does not store the letters you enter or the words you search for. Each query is processed on our server and the results are returned to your browser — nothing is logged or retained after your session ends. We do not require an account, email address, or any personal information to use the tool.
We use standard analytics to understand how the tool is used in aggregate — which features are most popular, how fast the engine performs, and whether there are any errors to fix. This data is anonymized and never tied to individual users. Our goal is to keep improving the tool based on how people actually use it, not to collect personal data.
